Head of the Rock 2015

It was a beautiful weekend of racing at the Head of the Rock regatta in Rockford Illinois this past Sunday. The team traveled down the night before where Dany and Denise Woods graciously provided us with food and a place to rest after the drive. We then proceeded to the Rockford YMCA were we spent the night. The next morning we woke up ready to race and took the short walk to our tents where the parents were already preparing an impressive breakfast.

We quickly unloaded the trailers and got to racing with the women’s novice 4+ starting off the day. Both of their boats performed well with their A boat only losing to one club team putting up a time of 22:43 and the B boat only two places behind with a time of 24:29.  Shortly behind them was the men’s open 4+ who’s A boat posted a top half finish and a time of 17:33. Our next race was a first in a long time for Marquette crew as we put out a mixed 8 which rowed hard and posted a time of 21:45.  Then next boats to go out were our two women’s 4+ which both did well with the lightweight boat losing out to only one other club team in the open weight category with a time of 20:16. Our next boat to go out was the men’s novice 4+, these guys did well for it being their second time racing together and placed fourth. Our other novice squad raced shortly after them in the novice women’s 8+ against stiff competition which consisted of over half the boats in their race being division 1.  Our final two races of the day were the varsity men’s and women’s open 8+ with our alumni boat coming together to race as well. All three of these squads stated having a great time out on the river braving the increasingly strong head wind leading to some large waves and a few wet rowers.

When all the racing was done we returned to Milwaukee where Steve Water, our storage locker neighbor, had invited us to a party on his pirate ship.  We cooked out and had brats and burgers and enjoyed the DJ. Thanks to everyone who supported us this weekend our next race is the big one, The Head of the Charles in Boston.
